Digg Promotion Algorithm Flowchart

I am a big fan of social news and I frequent both Kevin Rose’s digg and Wired’s reddit. Like anyone who occasionally visits both sites, it is very apparent that an increasing amount of content is rehashed from reddit.com by Digg power users (so called by their massive influence of the site).

I have created a handy flow chart to demonstrate this process.

While it can be argued that the content may not be original on reddit either, that’s not the point. The major question here is simply this; shouldn’t digg implement a system that promotes stories based on their merit and quality rather than the identity of the submitter?

What do you think?

pretty much what actually happens. i’ve given up on digg now as it just seems to be full of those people that comment on youtube videos.

Not only was your chart accurate, but highly entertaining. Two thumbs up. My personal favorite was the “fucked” label.

I do love the way you have presented this particular challenge plus it does indeed give us some fodder for thought. On the other hand, because of just what I have observed, I simply just wish when the comments pile on that people remain on issue and don’t embark upon a soap box associated with the news du jour. Still, thank you for this outstanding piece and though I can not really concur with the idea in totality, I value the standpoint.
