stickcat.net launched

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Surprised to see me? That’s right, inspiration struck and I am now officially reviving Stickcat’s online dwelling back from the gaping abyss of inaction.

I’m teaming up with high school cohort and capable digital drawer of stuff, Fritz Ifert-Miller to bring the many deeply disturbing images of my imagination to fruition. Why would I need someone to provide this service? Let me illustrate with this helpful figure that highlights the subtle differences between our art styles.

Let’s face it, in my drawing the vomit (or is it black oily pitch?) is simply falling out of the sun’s mouth. Also, why is he angry? Fritz on the other hand, has not only drawn the best looking putrescence I’ve ever seen, but is on the verge of taking the word projectile to new, exciting, and unexpected directions.

The bottom line is we will be writing the comic together. With my ability to boss people around and his ability to vaguely listen to my tirades, we will have surely worthy of your divine readership.

If you would like to know more about Stickcat’s past please feel free to check out the various links above. We will be updating on a consistent schedule (Monday, Wednesday & Friday). Watch this space as well for updates from various people involved behind the scenes at Stickcat.net!

A warrior is only as good as his weapon

Every day you log onto stickcat, you see the final product of everyone here at stickcat’s work.  What you don’t see is what happens behind the scenes, past the html coding and beyond the layers upon layers of photoshop work.  Today we would like to give you, the fanboy, an inside look into how the comic you all love and worship is made.

Digg Promotion Algorithm Flowchart

Monday, January 5th, 2009

I am a big fan of social news and I frequent both Kevin Rose’s digg and Wired’s reddit. Like anyone who occasionally visits both sites, it is very apparent that an increasing amount of content is rehashed from reddit.com by Digg power users (so called by their massive influence of the site).

I have created a handy flow chart to demonstrate this process.

While it can be argued that the content may not be original on reddit either, that’s not the point. The major question here is simply this; shouldn’t digg implement a system that promotes stories based on their merit and quality rather than the identity of the submitter?

What do you think?

Change.gov top user submitted question

This is the top question under Obama’s Change.gov Open For Questions forum.

Is this just some political pun I’m just missing?

Best Practice Sharing

Friday, January 30th, 2009

As Fritz’s last semester at the University of Connecticut ramps up, I am going to to need to step up and do my fair share of the artwork. I know, I know, don’t panic yet. In preparation of this busy season I purchased a tablet and Fritz has sent me several instructional Photoshop lessons on how to best draw the characters with minimal effort.

Not only does Fritz send me tutorials, but he also sends me helpful tidbits every now and again with some best practices and lessons learned during the comic drawing process. I received these helpful tips this morning that I thought I would share with you (all expletives have been covered with black).

The things that you won’t see.

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Today being “Did you see the game last night???” day we decided it would be fitting to produce a strip in line with the general theme of this holiday abhorred by geeks everywhere.

Actually, I forged my own… erhm…piece… to rationalize my relevancy in light of recent masterful productions by my cohort Fritz.

I command the weak willed to avert their eyes at once and let the heartier Internet denizens look onward to observe this new abomination I have besieged upon the World Wide Web.

Behold!

Too Cuil for School

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Today’s comic is a bit….abstract. Like most of our jokes at Stickcat, this one requires to be in tune with multiple obscure Internet phenomenon.

I give you Exhibit A: Cuil. The dastardly search engine conceived in the depths of hell from Lucifer himself. It’s ability to give irrelevant, pornographic laden search results for the most innocuous of queries is matched only by it’s own pretentiousness.

This problem was eventually corrected but, I mean seriously Cuil. No results for Cobol? I’ve seen less snootier things from Queen of England herself.

Exhibit B: Cuil theory. (Click more, for additional explanations) (more…)

Ohhhh Wikipedia

Monday, February 9th, 2009

So today marks the beginning of Fritz is not drawing the comic. Henceforth we will fondly refer to this period as the Dark Ages.  Yeah I know, I’m sorry, it will get better, I promise.

So with today’s comic, I’m not “hating” on your precious Wikipedia, I’m just sayin that even though in aggregate, a Wikipedia article is usually accurate; taking a snapshot at a single point in its chaotic time-line isn’t always… the best idea.

Death March

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

We regrettably arrive at comic number two along our forsaken path of Fritzlessness. Without the master’s sure and steady hand and ability to keep my morose thoughts off the page, I present to you the horrifying result. As the Lobsterpous’ tickling tendrils ensnare your mortal soul, I submit to you dear reader that I did try my best.

This comic was inspired by this prior entry into the Daily Campus (and by inspired I mean almost copied exactly): Don’t inquire why this one is entitled “Woodcat” either, I honestly have no idea.

Apparently cats don’t like going to the vet? What a fresh and exciting look at cat ownership! Am I right? Am I right folks? I thought so.

China

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Hello Stickcat netizens! As most of you already know, I’m currently in the midst of a three week business trip in Shanghai, China. What this means for you is  Fritz  has and will continue to hold down the proverbial stickcat.net fort until my triumphant return.

So how is China so far? Well the bad news is there are a new slew of cultural social cues I am unable to pick up on (this is on top of the ones I don’t understand in my own country). The good news? The foodstuffs!! Here’s a sampling of  two foods my pallet has become privy to.

(Left:A delicious Pigeon in a soup.  Right: “Rape”)

I have a bunch more pictures on my actual camera. I’ll post those up once I get some critical mass on the quality ones.
